Off Injury List

So I went to my PCP on August 29th to have my knee checked out. Of course knowing this wasn't a sports doctor I was not optimistic that I was going to get what I needed without
"defending" my status as a runner.

Well doctor comes in and immediately gives me the impression that he wanted to be done for the day. Well excuse me but if I could go home whenever I felt like it ... Anyway he listens to my story and then says he's no fan of running. Okay now this is getting worse...until he admits he's a fair weather runner and has knee issues of his own. He's still giving me some attitude but proceeds to try and twist my knee in all sort of weird ways to try and get it to hurt and he couldn't. Okay so now I look like I'm complaining about nothing.

He tells me that in his opinion it is nothing but a strain but if not that then it would be a meniscus issue but I needed to give it more time. He feels I shouldn't be taking big chunks of time off but run a little everyday to keep the joint moving. I kind of look at him but I don't say anything. He is going to do me the "favor" of putting in the paperwork to get an MRI and if in two weeks I still "insist" that my knee hurts I can go ahead and make the appointment with the specialist.

Success!! I totally was okay with waiting a bit longer since it had been getting better but happy with the path cleared to move on if the problem did not resolve itself.

Long story short. My knee doesn't hurt anymore and the insurance rejected the request for the MRI anyway. Insurance wanted me to see an orthopedic first which would have been fine with me but kind of assumed that an orthopedic had to be the one to do the MRI anyway so if he didn't feel I needed one I wouldn't have gotten one. Whatever.

So now I can concentrate on complaining about my left ankle which hasn't stopped hurting since the damn race! This is a pretty common problem for me for decades as my feet are the perfect example of completely and utterly flat with the added bonus of a bunion on my left foot. Never stopped my training - mostly aches a lot.

I'm feeling pretty out of synch with my training because of the time spent on this stupid injury so I'm trying to get back into the swing of things. I'm contemplating scheduling a later marathon but many are already closed. We will see.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Peace

Dear Janeth,

Thanks so much for your support. This reminds me of the runner I think I told you about, Travis Morrison, and how he just got so healthy and everything. It won't hurt to have a cookie once in a while right? Just wondering since I'm in love with chocolate. Sorry I haven't replied sooner. School and running and now I got a cold 'cause yesterday was our Conference Meet and I went nuts screaming for our school to win. I should have listened to the assistant coach Mari when he said to put on the warm ups. Stupid homework oh well I'll get it done anyways I have so many questions to ask.

Ok well my usual 3 mile time is 27.30min and yesterday I got 25.29 but the coarse was 2.85 miles long. I have this weird dream/ wish that at LEAST I could run 3 miles in 19min. Do you think that's possible in 3.5years if I run during the winter and spring and then summer again and the whole cycle? When you were running at Schaumburg High school we were like number 1 (i think) at state. And well Mac is going to retire when I graduate and I just want to see our high school get up there again before he leaves (even though he should stay). That's sort of an ambition for me and I know we could because there's this freshman girl named Britten and she's running 19min flat for 3 miles and picking up the slack for our #1 senior running Emily Gallop since she's been having trouble breathing while she runs. And you'll never believe this but yesterday she ran the 2.85 miles in like 17 minutes! not 17 flat but still she was like #11 out of the top 25 runners. She's such a prodigy I swear she has a bum ankle and is running like this! I'm just blown away and envy her talent. What do you say about that? Think it'll happen? Like my goal and the goal for the school? Thanks for reading.

Hi There! I have been wondering where you had gone to.

Okay lets look at those times...
Usually you say you run about 27:30 for 3 miles, that's about 9:10 per mile. Recently you ran 25:29 for 2.85 and that's 8:56 per mile so that's a nice improvement. Remember though that its hard to compare times over different courses. To run 3 miles in 19 minutes you need to run about 6:20 per mile. Now that's a pretty big drop but if you keep that goal in your head as a long term goal it can keep you on the path for continuing improvement.

In track I had the goal of breaking 10:30 for 2 miles and that was after running 11:42 my freshman year and failing to qualify for state. No one, except for me, thought it was a realistic goal at the time but I kept that goal as a long term goal and on my very last race my senior year I ran 10:25....so you see anything is possible.

To address the every now and then cookie. Of course! Chocolate happens to be my absolute favorite. I make sure that my body is getting what is needs to stay strong and healthy and to help meet my training needs and if I do that first then yes, of course, I can have dessert or something. I get totally annoyed by people who are so strict with their eating that they can't even enjoy eating...what fun is that?? Good healthy foods I love and everything else in moderation is what has worked best for me. Of course my husband is the greatest cook in the world, so that helps
:-)
Well I best be getting back to work. Remember as the season ends and winter comes you need to be putting in steady easy miles to be ready for track. I think you will like track as now you can choose from different distances.
Take care,
Janeth
